Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry has supported the Nothing But Nets campaign since his days
at Davidson College. Now a star in the
NBA, Curry vowed to donate three life-saving bed
nets for every three point shot he made during the 2012-2013 season to help
protect families in sub-Saharan Africa from malaria. After breaking the single-season record for the
most three pointers made in a single season, Curry will donate more than 800
insecticide-treated bed nets.
Curry’s generous “Three for Three Challenge”
helped Nothing But Nets provide
partners in Chad, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, and other countries in Africa with
critically needed bed nets. Every 60 seconds a child dies from malaria. But bed
nets provide a simple, cost-effective solution, and can reduce the spread of
malaria by up to 90 percent in areas with high coverage rates. Since 2006,
generous supporters have given Nothing
But Nets more than $45 million to send over 7 million bed nets to mothers
and children across Africa. It takes just $10 to send a net and save a life.
Curry was
selected by Golden State in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft (7th
overall). He entered 2012-13 owning
career averages of 17.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.67 steals in 34.0
minutes He also entered the season as the only player in NBA history with
career percentages of at least .470 from the field, .440 from three-point range
and .900 from the foul line. He was a
member of the 2010 USA Men's Basketball Senior National Team that went 9-0 and
won the Gold Medal at the 2010 FIBA World Championships in Turkey.
